Shear Kindness – Canvas for Cancer

In Uncategorized on January 28, 2011 at 9:11 pm

On Wednesday night I attended a charity event run by creative, Brii Rose who is also the brainchild behind this very worthy charity, Canvas for Cancer.  Like you, me and probably the person sitting next to you or passing you on the street, cancer has affected all of us in some way and was too close to home in Brii’s case so she decided to make a difference – using her talents and giving other creatives the chance to help out as well.

There has never been a fundraiser based on the beauty of the human body quite like this one before. A self proclaimed “modified” benefit, Canvas for Cancer focuses on the art of body modifications in our community. The event will act as a entertainment gallery night with all the net proceeds going to the Canadian Cancer Society and being organized by 100% volunteers, it’s not only a way to help and support the community, but to support cancer patients and survivors, as well as have a good time and celebrate life.

Brii has many events lined up, but this particular one was held at a funky hair salon where donators got their hair snipped for very reduced prices.  All the proceeds are passed on to the Canadian Cancer Society (http://www.cancer.ca) which covers the different types of cancer as well as the after care/recovery.

To keep up to date with future events, such as the Rockabilly Bowling Tournament, Acoustic night as well as paintings that will go on auction soon, behind the scene pics, news updates and newsletters, lucky draws and more, log onto the charity’s FB page:

Worn by Patricia van der Vliet, the spring designs bring romantic visions somewhere a cross between fairytale princess and sci-fi heroine with the intriguing styling of loose-fitting silhouettes paired with print and metal works.

Interview with Ashley Hodge on the Debut of Emmerson Hodge Magazine: The Mertz Issue

In Interviews on January 15, 2011 at 1:26 pm

I caught up with art director Ashly Hodge, and interviewed him on his collaboration with photogapher Nicky Emmerson and model Ryan Mertz to create the Emmerson Hodge Magazine: The Mertz Issue, which recently graced the London newsstands.

What is your career background and how did you get into art directing?
I come from a graphic design-based background, and fell into art direction whilst designing underwear packaging. I’d previously done a bit of art direction on still life food shoots, I then found myself directing men in just underwear – it was a big difference.  I was lucky enough to work alongside a really good creative director who gave me some great advice and tips, which has helped a lot.

How did you meet Nicky Emmerson and Ryan Mertz and how did the Emmerson Hodge magazine come about?
I worked with Nicky for the first time in March, and we got on really well.  I loved her attention to detail, enthusiasm and she’s a great photographer. I had her on my list of people I really wanted to work with, so was really pleased when it worked out.  Ryan was actually the model on that shoot, and we loved the idea of doing a book on one model, with lots of different stories…more of a self-promotion thing, to begin with. It was Nicky’s idea to actually make the book into a magazine that we could send out to people.

Why was Ryan the perfect model for your first issue?
Well Ryan was the inspiration for the magazine, and we knew we wanted a “real” man for the shoot, a model with a decent body to pull off the ’80s feel to some of the stories we had in mind. From some of the stories we’d seen in his book, we saw that he could pull off different looks, and take on personalities. He’s a great muse!

What are the three stories in the magazine about and where were they shot?
The first story is based on my favourite film American Gigolo.  It’s so stylish and cinematic and I thought that it would translate well as stills.  We found a great penthouse apartment in London that had a Miami/LA vibe to it. Ryan really took on the persona of Richard Gere on the shoot, flirting with everyone, which I think gave the shoot a great narrative.  Retrospective is a homage to Elvis; something that Nicky had been wanting to shoot for a while, and it happened to be bang on trend with what’s going on in menswear for s/s 11.  It was shot in sunny Watford in the south east of England of all places!  Finally, The Breakfast Club is based on some old early 1980’s tear sheets from a magazine Nicky had. The tear sheets were a location shoot, so we interpreted it into a studio to give our own twist on the story.

Speaking of stories, a little bird told me you like to make them up – care to indulge?
Haha, yes that’s the kid’s stories I make up for my Niece and Nephew!  Who told you that!?!?!  I’m embarrassed!

What are your plans for Issue Two and when can we expect it?
Issue Two is coming out this summer; I don’t want to give too much away, but it will be a womenswear focused issue, and we will retain the one model concept throughout the magazine…everything else is top secret!

You obviously have an eye for fashion, what were your favourite trends of 2010 and where do you shop most?
My favourite place to shop is most definitely J Crew when I go to the states. I like simple classic items that I can put with something that’s may be on trend to mix things up. My favourite trend in menswear is the whole denim story. I LOVE denim.

Do you have any fashion No-No’s?
Personally I hate seeing turn ups on men when they are too high! Any more than three turns and you are paddling in a pool!

A wee bit dated (not by too much) from my collection of favourite images, which I wanted to post because it’s just too beautiful not too – now I bet this is what little girls dream are made of.

Always a popular editorial subject, Amber Gray captures a bridal themed story for this Decembers issue of Brides Magazine.  Starring Valerya and styled by Rachel Leonard, the enchanting spread goes from a fantastical garden to the luxurious indoors.

Introducing…the Mini Spotlight by Dries Preston

In Uncategorized on January 11, 2011 at 12:02 am

DRIES PRESTON, launched in 2010 by Carlene Junjulas, is young, creative, bold and innovative and has just launched a debut collection of clutch handbags. The line is called Mini Spotlight and it caters to all women who want to make a statement! The soft pleated silhouette made in eye-catching metallic leather is the perfect balance of feminine and fierce.

DRIES PRESTON signature Color Blast Light and stunning purple interior, make this bag the perfect accessory for a night out while illuminating your bags contents – GENIOUS!

Available:  http://www.driespreston.com

I contacted Carlene for a little interview to gain more insight into her clever creation:

How did you get into your profession?
It’s the typical “For as long as I can remember I always wanted to pursue a career in fashion design”. It’s not for anything other than having the reward of bringing my designs from conception to completion. The bags are designed to help make life a little easier. When I’m engaged in a meaningful creative way I feel energized and it truly brings happiness.

Why did you start with handbags?

When I decided to start the company and create the brand I knew that my artistic freedom would best begin with bags. They are wearable pieces of art. I love how a woman’s confidence exudes when she picks up a beautiful bag.

How did your idea about this product come about?
From understanding of a women’s need for function. This bag works. It easily locates your essentials and will finally put an end to fumbling in the dark for your ID, keys or lip-gloss! And don’t worry the light isn’t too bright!

Tell me a little about the clutch?
It’s bold. It’s fun. It’s the Ultimate Party Clutch that will definitely put you in the spotlight with it’s illuminating interior. The light is switched on or off when opening and closing the bag via the magnetic button. The covered battery case has an on/off switch so the light can be turned off completely during daylight hours.

What inspires your designs?
Other people–their needs and desires. Most of all, my own personal experiences. I’m also inspired by the elements: rain, wind, sun, nature and color of course. Since inspiration happens naturally meditating helps make my next moment fresh, entirely new and alive.

What’s in your clutch at the moment?
My camera (that gets a lot of use!), keys, cell phone, small wallet and lipgloss!
Do you ship orders to Europe and the UK?
Currently I only ship to the US but I will be incorporating European and UK shipping very soon.

What is your favorite fashion trend and what is your fashion pet hate?
Color is always a favorite. Color is often shied away from and having a bright accessory makes a statement without being too obnoxious. My pet hate is following trends too closely and not allowing for ones personality to shine through.

What can we look forward to next from you or have you got any more creations up you sleeve?
A larger sized clutch. The “GRAND SPOTLIGHT” is for the girl who holds everything in her bag! It’s coming soon so be sure to check out my website. Aside from that, I have lots of big plans for 2011 but you’ll have to wait and see…

What is your motto in life?
Anything is possible!

Styling job from December…

In Uncategorized on January 10, 2011 at 6:07 pm

This was such a fun shoot to do.  We woke up at the crack of dawn, armed with big blankets, hot water bottles and flasked tea and headed over to Richmond Park hoping and praying that the first bit of December snowfall hadn’t completely melted away.  It was absolutely freezing but we managed to get in and out under 2 hours!
